LOCAL HANGOUT || Bean Scene Coffee Works

A double-height entryway, communal tables as workspaces on the second floor, and an outdoor patio that doubles as an event space - Bean Scene Coffee Works has all the elements to be a local favorite hangout.

And it is.

The piano donated by a customer.

In the early evening, we stopped by for a bite before heading out to the Kelowna airport for our flight and were greeted by Al, who showed us around the space. The first floor is set up with several gathering spaces, with plush velvet armchairs and couches to welcome guests to settle in. Interesting and unique collectible items add character to the space, such as the vintage piano on the first floor, kindly 'dropped off' by a customer some years ago, now inspires spontaneous live music in the cafe.

By the pick-up counter where customers wait for their drinks, a thick, worn notebook titled "Okanagan Love Gratitude Journal" is brimming with supportive and encouraging messages from those who took the time to share their thoughts. Regulars make conversation with the staff as they stop by for their daily pick-me-up.

On the second floor, freelancers and students focus on completing their latest projects. A small space is set up with armchairs and sofas for friends who prefer a quieter space away from the coffee brewing equipment.

The third-floor patio opens to the back of the building, with wooden booths and cushions for those who want to bask in the summer sun. Al shares with us that the patio is also a popular event space, lent to non-profits and community events. The coffee shop also hosts unique events such as what Al calls 'Silent DJ Yoga'. He explains that yogis are given headphones to listen to the DJ's music as they practice.

Bean Scene Coffee Works works to support the local community, both by offering up their space for events and also supporting young and emerging artists in the Kelowna community by allowing them to showcase their artwork in each of their six locations in Okanagan, British Columbia.

From aspiring sixth graders to up and coming artists, the featured artwork is a win-win for both Bean Scene Coffee Works and the artists; the artists receive extra exposure and Bean Scene gets to showcase one-of-a-kind artwork.

In addition to giving back to the community, Bean Scene Coffee Works also keeps the community caffeinated, with their delicious lattes, expert pour over coffee, and specialty teas supplied by ChaiBaba Tea. Their healthy menu is a great way to start your day, and we chose to have the Breakfast Wrap and Glory Bowl. We loved the sweet, fresh vegetables atop a bed of chewy, nutrient-rich brown rice.

With its central location in downtown Kelowna right on Bernard Avenue, Bean Scene Coffee Works' flagship store is a great breakfast, lunch or afternoon stop in addition to getting your caffeine fix.
