#MakeArtWhileApart || Mural Artists Take to the Streets in Vancouver to Show Support for their Local Community

The streets of downtown Vancouver on a quiet Tuesday afternoon were deserted, save for a few passersby taking photos of the supportive murals by local artists.

Into week 7 of Canadians staying home to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we stopped by Robson Street to take in the beautiful, vibrant murals lining Robson Street, Vancouver’s shopping street. The murals carry encouraging messages, such as ‘Take Care’, ‘Hope’, ‘Alone Together’, and ‘Together for What’s to Come’.

Mural artists taking part in the annual Vancouver Mural Festival have picked up their art brushes to share supportive messages with their local community. Instead of walking down a deserted street of storefronts boarded up to prevent break-ins, their efforts have helped to lift the spirits of all who walk past.

Mural by artist @animalitoland spanning the length of the Zara Men’s and Women’s storefront

The expansive mural by @animalitoland captured our attention with its vibrant orange, purple and blue hues depicting the passionate skies. Residents of a building are shown in their own little slice of heaven, flying a paper airplane, or shining a light across the way to interact with neighbours; it shows how life’s little pleasures can be quite simple.

Another mural covers the length of the MUJI store and is designed by Taka Sudo. Enlisting the use of our favourite emojis, we couldn’t help but smile as we walked past.

If you are looking for a space that will brighten your day, we recommend taking a stroll down Robson Street to experience the love and support depicted in the murals (while adhering to social distancing measures, of course).

As we are all figuring out our own way to reach the new normal, let us all stay safe, stay home, and stay real.
