ORIGINAL SOKOS HOTEL TRIPLA || New Scandinavian Hotel in the Heart of Helsinki

Located in the largest shopping mall in the Nordics, the large Original Sokos Hotel Tripla will surprise you with its intimate and cozy atmosphere reminiscent of home.

The timeless, Scandinave-inspired hotel designed by Helsinki-based design studio FYRA is a tranquil retreat from its busy surrounding. The idea was to create a space that will contrast the hustle and bustle of the large-scale shopping mall connected to one of the city’s major transport hubs - a safe haven for travelers and locals alike to enjoy a restful retreat in the heart of the city. In a collaborative effort with partner branding design agency, Werklig, FYRA was able to create a strong narrative and a sense of community for the large, 430-room hotel.

For the design team, the biggest challenge was to instill warmth, comfort and a sense of intimacy despite the hotel’s massive proportion. To do this, a familiar and modern Scandinavian design is adopted to bring light and airiness into the space. A hand-picked selection of artworks by local artists brings life and colors to the high volume walls, while collectives from Finnish Villages evokes a village-like feel.

Seamless connection between the hotel and vibrant shopping options

The hotel lobby opens up into the mall with an inviting bar and cafe, welcoming passersby to step in for a peek with its large, open doors and flowing white drapes. The homey and inviting feel extends from the communal spaces all the way to the rooms to create a holistic and fulfilling stay.

Much like FYRA’s other projects, sustainability was part of the design process from the start. Emphasis was made early on in the selection of both materials and style choices that can stand the test of time, and opting for choices that can decrease the amount of waste being produced from the project.

Other design concepts that were adopted include the use of concrete, an effort to recreate the environment of Pasila Design, paying homage to the Helsinki-based artist. Throughout the hotel, the concept of grids can often be found, from the wood panels on the walls of the communal spaces to the textured black bedroom doors in selective guest rooms.

The design concept often uses new solutions to solve some of the most common hotel problems, while also questioning the conventions of hotel design. The result is a range of new furniture solutions and floor plans, as well as new technical solutions designed to handle high volume and consumption.
