BREAD X BUTTER CAFE || Signature Egg Toasts and Weekend Brunch

Having a thick egg toast for breakfast is a comforting treat. It reminds me of my childhood days when I started school each day with a ham and egg sandwich.

This is why when I heard that Bread X Butter Cafe in downtown Vancouver had these delicious egg toasts on their menu, I could hardly contain my excitement. Just imagine fluffy, housemade thick toast split in half and then stuffed with a generous portion of creamy, runny scrambled eggs and hearty slices of meat, mushrooms, or prawns, depending on what flavour egg toast you choose. The best news is that these tasty egg toasts are all $10 and below(!)

The cafe is located inside of Cathedral Place Building on Hornby Street, facing a tranquil courtyard bordered on the other end by Bill Reid Gallery. Those working within the building enjoy these tasty egg toasts on a daily basis, and we managed to stop by on the weekend just before closing to try these new creations by Chef Felix Zhou, former Top Chef Canada competitor and Founder of Heritage Asian Heritage. It’s different from the Asian fusion dishes and artistically plated fine dining creations we are used to from this innovative chef, which shows how he continues to re-invent himself through new challenges.

The cafe menu offers an array of options from light eats such as bagels and avocado toast to more hearty items such as Chicken and Waffles, Scallop Benny, and Blueberry Pancakes (served as part of the Weekend Brunch menu).

The Egg Toasts jam-packed with fluffy scrambled eggs are definitely the signature items to try, and we tried the Hawaiian Luau Egg Toast and Truffle Egg Toast. If you have visited Hawaii and love their spam musubi, then the Hawaiian Luau would be your go-to, as it’s like an expanded, juicier, more filling version of a spam musubi (topped with melted cheese and mayo - yes please!)

The Truffle Egg Toast is aromatic and delightful with truffle aioli, creamy mushrooms, melted cheddar, and scrambled eggs that are done just right. Just the scent of the truffle aioli and fresh toast will make your mouth water.

Since we stopped by on the weekend, we took advantage of the opportunity to try the Weekend Brunch menu items, and we have to say that the Scallop Benny stood out for us because the scallops were cooked perfectly so that the texture is smooth and buttery; the texture is light as a marshmallow.

For those who like their Chicken and Waffles, the large piece of deep fried chicken with juicy, crispy chicken skin paired with waffles that taste good even without syrup would make for a great start to your weekend.

The dilemma - what should you have first?

Cathedral Place is a commercial building during the week with office workers heading to and from work, albeit at the moment the building is not as busy due to the high volume of people working from home. A visit over the weekend offers a quieter setting where you can enjoy your breakfast or brunch whilst gazing out the window at the quiet courtyard.

Bread x Butter Cafe looks out to a spacious courtyard just off busy Hornby Street, providing a quiet recluse from the fast pace of the city just beyond the steps. This green space is actually part of Bread x Butter Cafe’s lease and can be rented (when Covid measures are lifted) for private gatherings. We hope that this happens in the near future because we can’t think of a better space where we could host an intimate family gathering for kids’ birthday parties paired with the delicious catering services of Chef Felix Zhou!
