KINTON RAMEN || All Day Breakfast Ramen

Nothing kickstarts your day like a piping hot bowl of ramen. Whether it’s a lightly sweet soy broth or an intense spicy garlic broth, hot soup warms up the body instantly for an empowered start to the day.

This is why when we heard Kinton Ramen was serving up All Day Breakfast Ramen, we knew we had to go try it. It’s exactly as you would imagine it; the All Day Breakfast Ramen has all the ingredients of a healthy, tasty breakfast. Of course, since we made the trip to the UBC Point Grey campus to try this ramen, we took the opportunity to try other items on the menu as well.

Pork Age Gyoza and Ton Ton Don

A ramen house visit just doesn’t seem complete unless you also get a side of gyoza and a small rice bowl. Did you know that when you visit a ramen house in Japan there is a combo you can order where your ramen also comes with a small donburi? It’s definitely loading up on carbs, but believe me when I had many satisfying combo meals at these ramen houses when I lived in Japan.

Back to our appetizers, the Pork Age Gyoza was thinly-fried on the outside, providing a nice crispy crunch before you bite into the juicy pork inside. Take a look at the photo below to see the crispiness of the gyoza up close.

We also had the Ton Ton Don, a small pork donburi where a generous scoop of marinated pork is placed on top of the rice, and you need to mix it in with the rice because the sauce is underneath the rice. We guarantee you will want to come back for seconds.

On to the main attraction, the ramen bowls. We ordered the featured All Day Breakfast Ramen and the Spicy Garlic Pork Ramen. You also have the choice of thick or thin noodles, so we decided to try both, pairing the Breakfast Ramen with thin noodles and the Spicy Garlic Pork with thin noodles.

The All Day Breakfast Ramen is Kinton Ramen’s Japanese-inspired take on the classic North American Breakfast. This is why you will find blow-torched tomato with melted swiss cheese on top, crunchy hashbrowns (kakiage), peameal bacon (pork belly), and a soft-boiled egg topped with chili pepper and chili oil (onsen tamago). Oh wait, let’s not forget the butter square that will add a creamy flavour and texture to the vegetarian miso broth.

Let’s take a closer look at the delicious All Day Breakfast Ramen.

Pork belly with thin ramen noodles

The jiggly onsen egg next to the butter square already makes our mouths water. We love how the chili pepper and chili oil add extra flavour to the onsen egg. Scallions and corn also soak up the vegetarian miso broth perfectly for extra texture and crunch with every bite.

The size of the hashbrown is impressive, and it’s important how it has been ‘plated’, above the soup so when it’s served it’s not soggy but still nice and crunchy. We also loved the blow-torched tomato with swiss cheese, because you can never have enough cheese(!) Finally, the pork belly is the perfect ratio of meat and fat — easy to bite through and with packed with flavour.

We also chose the thin noodles with this soup, making sure to soak up more flavour from the broth with each bite.

We also had the Spicy Garlic Pork Ramen with thick noodles, and the server shared with us that this is the most popular broth on the menu. If you love spicy Japanese noodles, you will find this broth very…exciting (for your taste buds).

The level of spiciness is just right; it’s spicy enough to make the sides of your nose sweat a little, and your taste buds a little numb. The scoop of garlic is the optimal finishing touch because it makes the broth smell much more flavourful, and of course, taste amazing.
