MUSICIAN'S APARTMENT || Dynamic Colours and Nordic Calm in Kyiv, Ukraine

Colours within the home enrich our living experience.

In the case of the Musician’s Apartment designed by Julia Baydyk in Kyiv, Ukraine, rich blue and noble maroon colours set against a calm graphite background creates a dynamic yet soothing living space.

From the entryway to the home, a feature wall showcases contrasting vertical stripes in navy blue and silkstone grey. The stripes vary in thickness and remind us of piano keys, an apt reference for a musician’s apartment.

The tiles and the wall are both a similar shade of grey.

Contrasting patterns and dynamic colours .

The kitchen and living room utilize an open plan design, and the integrated kitchen appliances free up more room in the kitchen to include a dining area facing the windows. Ample storage, cupboards and shelves, line the walls up to the ceiling. The kitchen cabinets are the colour of silkstone — a beautiful and calm colour that plays interesting shades at different times of the day. Bright green Svartisen chairs tucked underneath the dining counter add emotion to the calm graphite background and complement the overall Northern Scandinavian design for a stylish and functional space.

The kitchen design saves space and orients the dining area towards the windows for natural light.

Something special can be created using simple materials such as a play of colours, texture and rhythm of tiles, rare musical instruments, ceramics and decor.

Sink into the sofa wrapped up in a blanket to enjoy your morning coffee.

The designer describes the bedroom as theatrical, with a large sitting area and a cube-shaped closet hidden behind a heavy curtain that resembles a dressing room. The layout intentionally removes unnecessary details to make the bedroom feel more spacious. Thick drapes in a majestic red shade enable the residents to block out light from the bedroom for absolute darkness for an undisturbed night’s rest. Light-toned hardwood flooring is used in the bedroom to create a sense of separation from the main living area.

Rich textures and jewel tones creates a relaxing atmosphere.

Rich velvet armchairs in a calming blue sets the mind at ease in the bedroom.

The Musician’s Apartment is an example of how carefully curated colours and textures can add character to a home. It provides much-needed inspiration for those of us who would love to add a bit of colour to our homes in the new year. Wouldn’t you agree?
