HISTORIC HOME || A Stunning Interior with Bespoke Furnishings to Showcase an Antique Art Deco Vase Collection

When designing an interior space to display a collection of art deco vases, every detail counts.

For a collector, the ability to showcase their prized possessions is key. That’s exactly what the creative duo, architect Oleg Klodt and interior designer Anna Agapova achieved when they tackled the challenge of designing an apartment for a collector of antique art deco vases in a historic building.

The unique shape of the building presented a challenge for the design team. Still, they were able to incorporate the asymmetrical geometry of the outside walls and unusually shaped bay windows to their advantage. The result is an open-plan living room space that seamlessly connects to the dining room and kitchen while also providing a sense of separation with the use of walls and unique materiality to define each room.

In the centre of the space, connecting the kitchen, dining room, and living room, there is a futuristic art object – a cube with a mirror façade. Behind it is a lit-up bar on one side and kitchen appliances on the other. The kitchen working area is concealed behind sliding facades.

The home features two studies—his and hers—each with its character and style. The his study houses an expansive collection of vinyl records.

The bespoke furnishings throughout the home add to the overall elegance and sophistication of the space. From the sculptured worktop base of the kitchen island to the Lyra console, Heather Spring rug, and Octantis coffee table from the O&A London collection, each piece blends seamlessly with the objets d’art in the room. Textiles also played a crucial role in creating the overall aesthetic. The De Le Cuona curtains, recreated from prints used in the textiles of Queen Victoria reception rooms, add an additional layer of refinement.

The open-plan connects the kitchen, dining and living room in the irregularly shaped historic residence.

One of the key design features of the apartment is the display of the antique art deco vases. Cupboards and decorative alcoves with spotlights were specially designed to hold the client’s large and unique collection of fragile vases. The residence also features two studies, his and hers, in the home library, where bespoke shelves in the his study house an extensive collection of vinyl records.

In the centre of the space, a futuristic art object in the form of a cube with a mirror façade connects the kitchen, dining room, and living room. Behind it, a lit-up bar on one side and kitchen appliances on the other provide additional functionality. The Terzo bar from Bruno Moinard in the dining room is made from walnut with ceramic inserts that resemble the facades of brutalism design buildings from the 50s and 60s. It resonates with the dining table from Hyde Park, creating a cohesive design aesthetic.

The master bedroom is a private oasis with a walk-in wardrobe providing access. The light shades with warm notes and various textures create an intimate atmosphere. Exclusive decorative gypsum panels behind the headboard add dimension and create different light effects depending on the light source. The tactile Flakes rug from Tapis de Bourgogne brings the space together, creating an intimate atmosphere.

Outside, the hall feels like a private gallery with a collection of beautiful paintings in golden frames displayed against dark-coloured walls. The mosaic on the floor and wall light by designer Stéphane Parmentier from the French brand Pouenat, and lights by architect Jean Michel Valmont, create an atmosphere reminiscent of a contemporary French artistic salon.

The interior layout, design program, and bespoke furnishings all work together to provide the best display for the collection of art deco vases. The design team at Oleg Klodt and Anna Agapova overcame the challenges presented by the non-standard shape of the building and created a sophisticated and elegant space that seamlessly integrates the antique art deco vases with the overall design aesthetic. The result is an apartment that truly showcases the beauty of the art deco vases while providing a functional and visually stunning living space.
