THE HEALING ENERGY OF SOUND || An Ancient Form of Healing Through Sound and Vibration

Meditative, harmonizing sound baths aid in calming the body and mind, increasing relaxation and wellbeing.

Sound is a vibrational frequency that can inspire many emotional responses, including a revitalizing sense of peace and calm, similar to the overpowering feeling you get when you listen to music during a heart-pounding workout or the tranquillity of listening to rainfall in the distance. These moments are moments of transcendental experience, and we aspire to extend these experiences where sound is concerned.

Sound healing dates back to ancient times.  It is a healing technique that uses tonal frequencies to bring the body into a state of vibrational balance and harmony. This helps restore and heal the body, mind, and spirit giving it more vitality as well as bringing one into a state of relaxation, stillness and calmness.

So how does it work?

In a sound healing session, also known as a sound bath, you’ll lie flat on the floor or a yoga mat and simply listen as the sound healing practitioner plays instruments throughout the session. The practitioner will play various instruments - singing bowls, gongs, Tibetian bowls, crystal bowls, or chimes - as you start to “bathe in the soothing sounds and vibrations. These instruments are used most often by healing practitioners. Although it may sound like a new-age fad, sound healing is one of the oldest forms of therapy. When used with proper intentions, almost any instrument can be used in sound healing.

Each instrument has its own vibration pattern that can create wondrous sensations throughout your body depending on which ones are used. Some instruments vibrate at a slower frequency than others and have been shown to have an effect on anxiety, depression, stress and more.

The magic is when you guide the person into their own stillness. All these bowls are just a tool. The instruments are not the most important element, the key is watching someone go into their own space and flow through the process of healing.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s take a look at the benefits of sound healing.

Relaxation

Deep relaxation is one of sound therapy's most significant and universal benefits. It can be experienced during a single session or over time, depending on the frequency and nature of your sound experience. In deep relaxation, there is a conscious effort to quiet the mind as well as to relax the body and improve the quality of sleep.

Clears Energetic Blockage

The vibrations of sound release blocked energy and can increase your sense of well-being. Sound healing for chakras is an ancient yet powerful technique to balance your energy centers. The vibrational frequencies that resonate through our bodies can help to align and rebalance the chakra system, which is connected to all of the body's systems and is believed to affect our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

Health Booster

The healing energy of sound complements medical treatments because, in addition to trusting in medicinal science, it’s equally important to find your inner peace within.  When you find peace within, you can heal your body naturally. Doctors call it “the power of the placebo” and the healing potential of an unmedicated person with a positive mindset is immense. When we seek treatment, doctors can help us, but if you are not at peace with yourself, then your body is not in equilibrium. When it’s out of sync, your body cannot heal itself.

Supports Mental, Emotional, Spiritual Well-Being

When you stop the constant flow of thoughts and take a moment of stillness, you gain better awareness and control of your emotions. You also discover your purpose and what’s important to you. A spacious mind allows you to learn to change your relationship with your passing thoughts and feelings and view them from a new perspective. In essence, this healing sound of energy helps you become more grounded in yourself.

The Takeaway

Deep breath, now exhale. Using your instruments, breath and sound to explore the body can be an incredible way to connect with and learn more about yourself. The healing energy of sound is a powerful tool to heal while providing a safe, non-judgemental space where you don't have to talk or feel judged. Through your self-awareness, you can gain clarity and increase your intuition and permission for yourself to take action in accordance with your values.
