JAVA ROOFTOP BAR IN LISBON || Surround Yourself With Postcard-worthy Views Wherever You Are Seated

When we step into a restaurant, we always want to pick a table by the window, simply because a breathtaking panoramic view can certainly elevate our gastronomic experience.

Yet here in Java, a rooftop bar in Lisbon designed by Studio PIM in collaboration with EPL Streetfood, you don't have to worry about not getting the favourable spot to take in the view.

Java’s menu features Mediterranean cuisine and a great selection of grilled dishes.

Opened with a soft launch in May in Lisbon, the rooftop bar and restaurant Java offers a regularly changing seasonal menu and casual street food from the outdoor hatch. It is the only rooftop in the Cais do Sodré district with picturesque views down to the iconic Ribeiro Market across the Tagus River, making it the perfect spot to unwind with a sip of a cocktail as the sun sets.

Indeed, the restaurant tables are nestled between the double-sided bar and the open kitchen instead of pointing outwards, assuring the views are maximized to every diner stationed either on the terrace or close to a window.

A double-sided bar embraces both the characterful restaurant on one side and the sun flushed terrace on the other.

We didn’t want any diners to feel that they were stuck at the back, casting envious glances at others with better views, so we made all the tables equal – they all have a fantastic vista.

Java’s wide wraparound terrace boasts an unrivalled harbourside position.

The other side of the terrace overlooks the iconic vibrant-colored blocks of the capital.

A spectacular view is a crucial component to creating an elevated ambience, yet the restaurant owner refused to be led by it.

We wanted it to be a happy place with a calm buzz - to evoke a laidback vibe, reminiscent of California and Mexico. That seems apt for the country with the best surfing beaches in Europe.

You can easily spot lines of cactuses both indoor and outdoor.

While the indoor plants offer a lively atmosphere to the interior, a retro, earthy feel is conjured by every refinement, from the blue velvet horseshoe booths and mid-century Holophane globe lights to the smooth wooden elements and lines of cactuses, while the custom-made Pierre Frey fabric across the long banquette seats unites the identity with its warm bronze tones.

To enhance the sense of texture with a contemporary touch, the front of the bar and the lower half of the external walls are clad in long terracotta tiles as if having a conversation with the surrounding rooftops dotting up the hills.

There is a mid-century Holophane globe light above every horseshoe booth.

Every detail is carefully crafted. If you pay close attention, you can notice subtle complementary elements in every corner.

The smooth wood with the rough rendering of the wall, the neat lines of the outdoor tiles in contrast to the unruly cactus and Aloe Vera we planted. The Estremoz marble for the bar is local and has beautiful pink veins whilst the Pierre Frey fabric was made bespoke for us and brings everything together.
— Perrine explains.

The rooftop bar reminds diners of Santorini with its use of a blue and white palette.
