KOHÚTKA COTTAGE || Prefabricated Mountain Home Combines Sustainable Design and Wallachian Tradition

It took just one day to assemble Kohútka Cottage, yet its presence feels timeless against the mountain horizon.
Designed by SENAA Architekti, this contemporary refuge rises from the slopes of the Javorníky mountain range in the Czech Republic. This structure bridges the poetic cadence of local tradition with the quiet precision of modern engineering.
The sharply pitched roof and rhythmic wooden cladding reinterpret the vernacular architecture of the Wallachian hills.
Rooted in the vernacular forms of Wallachian architecture, the cottage reflects the essence of its surroundings rather than replicating them. Its sharply pitched roof and compact wooden façade recall the log dwellings once scattered across the region. At the same time, its western face reveals a strikingly modern gesture, an expanse of glazing that dissolves the boundary between the home and the valley below. The dialogue between solidity and transparency, craft and calculation, defines the spirit of this dwelling.
Reflections on the glass façade merge the cottage seamlessly with its alpine surroundings.
Constructed from prefabricated sandwich panels manufactured in the valley and assembled on-site in a single day, the cottage exemplifies the elegance of efficiency. The timber structure, supported by a concrete foundation, combines traditional material warmth with contemporary building methods. Prefabrication not only reduced construction time and environmental disruption but also ensured airtight precision and thermal performance aligned with low-energy standards.
Inside, the design channels the same harmony between nature and technology. The living room opens onto a western terrace, where panoramic windows invite shifting mountain light into the heart of the home. Natural materials, solid wood, stone, and raw concrete, create a tactile rhythm throughout the interiors, where handcrafted furniture and minimalist detailing lend an understated refinement. The ground floor also includes a small office, bathroom, and sauna, offering a balance between practicality and retreat.
Natural materials, a wood-burning stove, and panoramic windows create an atmosphere of warmth and openness.
Upstairs, the quiet zone unfolds beneath exposed beams. The main bedroom features a freestanding bathtub oriented toward the horizon, transforming everyday rituals into moments of contemplation. A balcony extends from the gable, offering yet another vantage to observe the passing clouds and seasons. Throughout the day, filtered light moves across the timber walls, echoing the rhythm of the landscape outside.
Exposed timber ceilings and handcrafted furniture reflect the home’s seamless blend of craft and modern comfort.
Energy efficiency lies at the heart of the home’s design philosophy. Heated exclusively by a heat pump connected to underfloor heating, the cottage harnesses passive solar gains during winter. On the other hand, its deep roof overhangs prevent overheating in summer, eliminating the need for air conditioning. It’s a home that breathes with the climate rather than resisting it.
Kohútka Cottage illustrates how advanced technologies and traditional sensibilities can coexist in perfect equilibrium. Its precision-built shell may have risen swiftly, but its quiet presence among the peaks speaks of permanence: a place where innovation and nature meet in an enduring conversation.
Breathtaking views from morning to evening.
