BOOK SOCIETY || A Bookstore, Wine Bar, and Community Haven in Berkeley’s Elmwood Neighborhood

Did someone say books, community, and wine? As a book lover, I’m upset Book Society isn’t located in my city.
Nestled in the heart of Berkeley’s vibrant Elmwood neighbourhood, Book Society is the realization of Laura Guzman’s lifelong dream—a place where literature, community, and wine culture converge. As a devoted book lover and wine enthusiast, Laura brings not only her passion but also a deep-rooted history of family entrepreneurship, advocacy, and community engagement into this unique concept. Book Society is more than just a bookstore or a wine bar; it is a thoughtfully curated community hub where people can gather, connect, and find inspiration in both the written word and meaningful conversation.
The cozy space invites visitors to settle in with some vino and the perfect read.
Designed to create an immersive and cozy atmosphere, Book Society invites visitors to explore books while savouring a glass of specially selected wine that complements their reading experience; reading a spicy romantasy? A full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect pairing. Immersing in a light-hearted summer beach read? A fruity rosé will put you in the right mood.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet moment alone with a novel, engaging in lively discussions with friends, or participating in a yoga session, the space is designed to be flexible and welcoming to a variety of experiences. The ambiance itself tells a story—bookshelves filled with diverse and thought-provoking titles, inviting corners that encourage introspection, and an overall aesthetic that promotes both discovery and interaction.
This is your nook if you feel like enjoying a glass of wine with your book.
The design of Book Society was thoughtfully crafted to balance its dual roles as both a bookstore and a social hub. As a hybrid space that combines a bookstore, a wine shop, and a communal gathering place, it was crucial to create an adaptable environment. Fixed bookshelves along the perimeter provide structure and a sense of permanence, while the central area remains flexible, allowing for various configurations based on current needs. Inspired by the dynamic nature of a pop-up book, elements of the space can be rearranged or reimagined, ensuring that each visit feels fresh and unique.
The space is designed to encourage communal gatherings. Good reads tend to spark insightful conversations!
Drawing inspiration from the mystery and allure of a speakeasy, the entrance of Book Society is designed to intrigue and spark curiosity. Windows at the storefront provide passersby with a glimpse of the cozy world inside, enticing them to step in and explore. Inside, small, framed vignettes nestled among the bookshelves create points of interest, subtly encouraging movement through the space. At the heart of it all, the bar serves as a focal point, framed by a dramatic circular cutout that immediately captures the eye from the entrance. This tunnel-like perspective guides visitors deeper into the space, fostering a sense of journey and discovery.
A key architectural element of Book Society is the repetition of elegant arches, which create a rhythmic and harmonious flow throughout the space. These arches extend outward from the bar, forming a natural visual path that subtly guides guests through various sections of the bookstore. The interplay of these curved frames enhances the warmth and intimacy of the environment, reinforcing the notion of the space as a welcoming retreat. The circular shape of the bar, paired with the framed archways, evokes the feeling of a hearth—a central gathering place where people come together to share stories, ideas, and experiences.
Book Society is a haven for book lovers, wine enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a space to unwind, reflect, and connect with a like-minded community. It celebrates storytelling in all its forms—whether found in the pages of a book, shared over a glass of wine, or experienced through the connections made within its walls.
Ladders along the walls allow guests to reach for top shelf reads and adds a touch of whimsy to the interiors.
