EL DORADO RESIDENCE || A Baja Sanctuary Celebrating Local Art and Craftsmanship

In the sun-soaked hills of Baja California Sur, Mexico, the El Dorado Residence gracefully unites contemporary design with the rich cultural tapestry of its surroundings.

Designed by Susan Marinello Interiors for a bustling blended family from Seattle, this home is more than a getaway—it's an eloquent tribute to Mexican artistry and craftsmanship.

Stepping into the residence, visitors immediately sense its refined yet relaxed charm, anchored in natural warm woods and a palette of neutral hues. The 10,200-square-foot space is an elegant gallery, its understated backdrop thoughtfully designed to showcase vibrant textiles, handcrafted furnishings, and evocative local art pieces, each carrying its own narrative.

Sunlit living spaces highlight the artwork by Frank Arnold, celebrating local artistic excellence.

At the heart of the home's living area, a captivating artwork by local artist Frank Arnold effortlessly commands attention, inviting contemplation and conversation. The selection of Arnold’s piece was personal, involving visits to his San Jose del Cabo studio, reflecting the homeowners' deep appreciation for local narratives embedded in art.

Throughout the residence, custom furnishings by Lily Jack feature prominently, each upholstered in luxurious fabrics from esteemed houses such as Pierre Frey and Thibaut. These pieces provide refined comfort while complementing striking artworks by Tracy Stuckey and Ivan Carmona, whose works speak intimately to the cultural spirit of the region.

Custom furniture and vibrant textiles set a tone of relaxed sophistication.

The dining room, accented by handmade Oaxacan pendants, offers authentic charm.

The dining area offers its own narrative of craftsmanship and heritage. Here, a custom-crafted dining table by Warchol Woodworking, paired with bespoke Lily Jack chairs dressed in faux leather from Weitzner, echoes the authenticity of local tradition. Illuminating the space are pendants from L’Aviva Home, handmade in Oaxaca, alongside baskets from Colombia's Rainforest Tribal Weavers—subtle yet powerful nods to Indigenous artistry.

Texture and materiality play pivotal roles in weaving together the home's narrative. Parota wood, native to Mexico, grounds cabinets with earthy warmth, while seagrass rugs, rope-accented lamps, and intricate cement tiles crafted by local Mexican artisans from La Perla enhance tactile richness, reminding residents and guests alike of the skilled hands behind each item.

Bedrooms blend tactile comfort with artisan details, creating intimate retreats.

Bedrooms are sanctuaries of serenity, highlighted by thoughtfully selected items like Mexican Otomi textiles framed from St. Frank and artisan lampshades echoing regional motifs. Each element has been sourced with intent, turning everyday living spaces into immersive galleries celebrating comfort and culture.

At El Dorado Residence, hosting family and friends is effortless and joyful. This home is a barefoot haven, where the boundary between indoor elegance and outdoor relaxation softly dissolves beneath the Baja sun. Here, everyday life transforms into an artful escape—a beautifully mindful pause from the ordinary.

Outdoor areas seamlessly extend the home's barefoot luxury ethos.
