KŘIŽÍK PAVILIONS || Prague's Iconic Landmark Becomes a Vibrant Community Hub

A place once built to celebrate a centenary, the Křižík Pavilions in Prague have gracefully transcended their temporary roots to become lasting icons of communal life.
Originally designed by architect Michal Brix for the 1991 General Czechoslovak Exhibition, these striking structures have undergone a profound transformation, evolving into vibrant, multifunctional spaces thoughtfully crafted for contemporary urban life.
Green rooftops seamlessly integrate communal gathering spaces with natural tranquillity.
An aerial view reveals the harmonious, balanced geometry of the pavilion’s green roofs, completed with flanking walkways and circular seating areas to soak up the sun.
After decades of intensive use, the Křižík Pavilions required rejuvenation to meet the modern demands of exhibition and social spaces. Led by the team at Výstaviště Praha, including architects Ondřej Píhrt, Štefan Šulek, and their collaborators, the revitalization combines sustainability, community engagement, and adaptive reuse. The result is a blend of history and progressive architecture reflecting a thoughtful urban renewal approach.
Central to the revitalization is the innovative reimagining of the pavilions’ expansive rooftops. Previously vast, concrete expanses, these rooftops are now verdant, vibrant oases accessible to the public. Green roofs, complete with lush vegetation and thoughtfully designed outdoor areas, offer spaces for relaxation, simple dining, and social interaction. Visitors find themselves immersed in inviting gardens, leisurely walkways, and playful elements—a welcome escape from city life.
Transparent architecture invites the community to engage and interact within a refined, contemporary setting.
Evening reflections highlight the elegant interplay of architecture and nature.
Beyond aesthetics, these green spaces actively contribute to Prague's environmental resilience, significantly reducing urban heat islands and enhancing air quality. Innovative stormwater management techniques in these roofs reduce runoff, allowing rainwater to nourish the greenery. This thoughtful ecological integration demonstrates how modern architecture can positively influence community life and urban ecosystems.
Inside the pavilions, industrial elegance defines the spaces. Matte black interiors provide a sophisticated canvas for highlighting exhibits and installations, contrasting with raw concrete and stainless-steel detailing. This aesthetic, rooted deeply in the building's original industrial identity, resonates with visitors seeking authentic and contemporary spaces.
Matte black interiors provide an ideal backdrop for art exhibitions.
Yet, the true charm of the new Křižík Pavilions lies in their versatile nature. Whether hosting exhibitions, fairs, concerts, or even television filming, the pavilions adapt effortlessly. They have become spaces where cultural life thrives and communities gather—a place where the social fabric of Prague grows stronger with each event.
Today, the Křižík Pavilions illustrate the possibilities of thoughtful renovation. Far from their temporary origins, they symbolize the profound beauty that emerges when community-centric architecture and ecological mindfulness come together, redefining the heart of urban life.
Families enjoy leisurely moments in thoughtfully designed communal areas.
Light-filled terraces encourage social connection and relaxation amidst urban greenery.
