MYKONOS || Blue Skies, Sparkling Water, and White Buildings

Over 300 days of sunshine per year.

That’s what our driver told us as he drove us to our resort at a leisurely speed of 30 km/hr.

This is why the homes it is mandated to have our homes painted at least once per year to maintain the pristine white exterior, to shield from the heat and also to avoid yellowing of the walls.

It is true what you see in online photos, the beautiful, square white homes dotting the landscape and soft, gleaming water blending with the gentle blue skies. A light mist hung in the air in mid-October when we visited.

Mykonos is a truly relaxing island, where visitors spend their days sunbathing, wading in shallow pools while sipping on cocktails, and visit the central village where all the buses go at night to experience the city’s infamous nightlife scene.

This is Mykonos through the eyes of a traveler who brought her parents with her. It should thus not be a surprise that my photos are mostly daytime photos(!)

Don’t let an overcast day fool you into stepping out without sunscreen.

A lone boat gently wading its way through the deep blue water that blends with the skies.

The Food Mall at the entrance to the central village area.

A photo that sums up the majority of visitors - lovers, family and friends who have to visit the ATM for cash to fund their spending.

A local carrying two bags from the grocery shop back home.

While all buildings are white, the doors and window sills are in contrasting hues of bold blues, greens and reds - every step will brighten your mood.

The steps down to the seaside.

How can one not have an obligatory photo of the infamous lighthouses? Check.

Though I would much rather take photos of daily scenes like this superbly enormous tree covering an entire residence.

My favourite photo. An elderly man manning one of many retail shops in the village sees my camera and offers up a genuine smile.

For every smiling man there is another patiently waiting for their companions to browse the hundreds of jewelry shops lining the cobblestone streets of Mykonos.

Rest assured there is no shortage of local and luxury shops where one can invest their life’s savings.

A lifeguard ensures visitors stay safe after consuming numerous cocktails at the restaurants and bars lining the seaside path.

The beautiful setting sun reflected on the water. A note of caution, bring a jacket as temperatures drop rapidly once the sun excuses itself.
